Injured Victim of Police Shooting Releases Statement Calling for Police Reforms, June 27, 2020

PRESS STATEMENT

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

June 27, 2020

STATEMENT ON BEHALF OF LATOYA RATLIEFF

Counsel for LaToya Ratlieff

After shooting her in the head for peacefully and lawfully exercising her first amendment rights, Fort Lauderdale Police continue their assault on LaToya Ratlieff and her right to free speech. LaToya continues to lack vision in her right eye as a result of the brutality of Fort Lauderdale Police. Given that their own incident report acknowledges that she was an innocent victim, the chief should be issuing an apology rather than attacking LaToya for sharing her experience with the public. She looks forward to briefing Congress about the police brutality she experienced at the hands of Fort Lauderdale Police while lawfully exercising her first amendment rights.

LaToya’s lawyers have been in touch with the Fort Lauderdale City Attorney. We await the release of all body camera footage from an incident that took place a month ago. Less than 48 hours ago, the City Attorney sent us a letter regarding LaToya’s participation in the internal affairs investigation. We invite the mayor and chief to meet with LaToya to discuss needed reforms and demonstrate their seriousness about preventing another tragic event like this from occurring. We also await their long overdue apology for shooting her in the head.
