LUISA SANTOS, SCHOOL BOARD CANDIDATE DISTRICT 9 WINS: JUDGE DISMISSED ELECTION CHALLENGE
Today (October 21, 2020) after a highly anticipated Court hearing, Circuit Judge Spencer Eig ruled that Luisa Santos, a run-off candidate for School Board District 9, was properly on the November 3 Ballot. Dismissing an election challenge filed by a voter seeking to remove Luisa Santos from the ballot, Judge Eig dismissed the case by ruling the lawsuit did not even state a legal claim. Luisa Santos proclaimed her victory as a “win for the people who want meaningful educational change and new voices for our public schools leadership. I am proud as a student of Miami-Dade’s Public Schools to receive so much support from our voters who are focused on making our South Dade Schools among the best in our County.”
The lawsuit, according to lawyer Ben Kuehne, was a thinly disguised political effort to silence Luisa Santos’ refreshing voice, “based on nothing more than dirty politics with no legal basis whatsoever.” As a resident of Homestead and a graduate of Coral Reef Senior High, Luisa would be “a new leader for our schools” at an especially important time as our community begins to recover from the Covid-19 pandemic. Kuehne, a well-known election law specialist, denounced the lawsuit as just another ploy to “subvert the will of the voters who propelled Luisa Santos into the run-off.” The only cure to silence these frivolous lawsuits is for “all voters to cast their ballots” to prove these tactics will not work.
